Open Studio Week in the Art Department at Coláiste Stiofáin Naofa is being run in conjunction with our exhibition Mind’s Eye, at Cork Vision Centre @ St. Peter’s, which showcases work from last year’s students, set in exhibition format by CSN students of Arts Administration.

The combining of these events gives your students the opportunity to see the work that our students have produced, check out our facilities, chat to our present students and ask questions about our courses.

The open studio week will run at CSN, Tramore Road, Cork - from 6th – 10th February from 10am to 1pm and from 2pm to 3.30pm each day. Mind’s Eye will run from 3rd to 23rd February at The Cork Vision Centre @ St. Peter’s, North Main St., Cork, Tuesdays through Saturdays 10 – 5 PM. Family workshops will run in conjunction with Mind’s Eye on Saturdays (4th; 11th and 18th Feb.) 11 AM – 1 PM – all ages invited; arts workshops; live music and childrens creative writing workshops.

All Art and Design Courses are Represented Intuitively in Mind's Eye

Providing a showcase for excellent work, created by students on specialist courses at CSN, is an important aspect of marketing the Art and Design Department. A comprehensive exhibition, entitled Mind's Eye, will put on view the work of the following courses: Art, Craft and Design; Access with Design; Creative Textiles; Creative Ceramics; Furniture Design; Multimedia/Screen-based Digital Media and Arts Administration .

The show debuts Thursday 2nd February, 6-8 PM, at Cork Vision Centre @ St. Peter's, N. Main Street, with Nicki Ffrench-Davis, Administrator of Civic Trust House, doing the honours of officially opening the show to the public. The exhibition has been organised and styled, educationally interpreted, minded for framing and matting, maintenance of plinths, new exhibition design elements and following an exhibition design schema.map by students of Arts Administration CSN.

The month of February will be an opportunity for the general public to enjoy the multi-faceted exhibition, invigilated by students of Arts Administration Tuesday through Saturdays, 10 AM - 5 PM), providing Guided Tours for groups with worksheets; special writing workshops for children and adults - to be announced (afternoons); Multimedia/Digital workshop sessions as drop-in after school interaction; Family Arts Saturdays - (with art activities, music and writing workshops 4th; 11th and 18th 11 AM - 1 PM).

The month of February is a "classroom in city-centre" where Arts Administration students put theory into practice and expand their work placement experiences with hands-on, practical work with the general public. Digital photography; Arts and the Community; Writing for the Arts Sector; Arts Event Management - some important modules on the course, all come into play when the human factor is added to sound educational preparation.

Exceptional finished work, created for May 2011 by students from the specialist courses, featured in the new installation, have been picked by their Course Directors. The variety of work includes fine finished furniture design by Jordi Esqueda, among others; Textile design by Fiona Cotter, Karin Kempf and Marika O'Sullivan (among others); portraiture- colour and light finished paintings by Access with Design students Tanya McMahon, Catherine O'Sullivan and Olwyn Grant show the introspective element of studying "oneself" as a model. Ceramic sculptures and vessels by Nicolaas Bester feature in the mezzanine installation, as well as architectural studies by Pat Galvin, among others. Art, Craft and Design, Fine Art students, show their versatility from Jennifer Ahern's gigantic squid-like ceramic whorl with tentacles to her mysterious sculpture, hanging in space like "the mind's eye".

Fine printmaking, drawing, painting, design in all areas and whimsical collages keep the show moving as a testimony to the good teaching exacted and creative nurturing enabled at CSN. The excellent student work produced over time, is proof-positive why so many of these individuals seek and go on to success at 3rd level education or pursue individual practice after leaving CSN.

The exhibition runs for 3 weeks at Cork Vision Centre @ St. Peter's, N. Main Street, closing Thursday 23rd February, for take-down on Friday 24th. For further information, contact:

Art, Craft and Design Students Build Skills through Research and Observation

Students on the CSN portfolio preparation course, Art, Craft and Design are building on their skills through research and observation.

Drawing is the basis of this intensive, hands-on, workshop and studio-based course.

Students have the opportunity to balance their studies with personalised

time tables leading towards application to 3rd level colleges and Universities in Ireland and the UK. Students who are interested in design areas are encouraged to explore design-based modules where students interested in Fine Art are studio-based in painting and drawing as well as sketchbook studies that include collage and other integral subsidiary modules in graphic design and design (for both fashion and architecture), combined materials, ceramics, sculpture, photography, Art Appreciation, and mandatory modules in Communications and Work Placement.

Students come away from the course with a sense of community in the arts - and an understanding of international trends in the arts that affect Ireland. Research can be done in the CSN library, where there is a fine collection of art and design books or on the Internet. The college has computer facilities, as well as basic tuition for students in Photo shop (through Digital Photography and Graphic Design).

Research Paper-writing is a major focus (midyear) of Art Appreciation, along with continued encouragement, for all students, to attend Festivals and arts co-op plus gallery events in Cork and environs. Guest speakers are part of well-rounded curriculum along with discussion groups, initiated in Communications classes plus tutorial-time, allowing for one-to-one tuition.

Congratulations 2011 Arts Administration Graduate, Áine Holden

Congratlations to Dublin native, Aine Holden, who graduated from Arts Administration Level 6, this year 2011. Aine has just secured a position at the Kendal Museum in Kendal, England. Her duties include Information Desk - front of House duties; management and PR; education programming and working with children.

Aine says everything we did on the Arts Administration course was valuable in preparing her for this opportunity. She did multiple work placements and volunteer placements during her course year, including Culture Night; Jazz Festival; Art Trail; Cork Printmakers and Kinsale Art Week.

She was Project Manger of the CSN February off-site exhibition in 2011, "Drawing Inspiration" where she assisted in hanging the show, invigilated, gave tours to the general public and participated in working with the Family Saturday Workshops. Her responsibilities included taking down the show and dealing with the artists and designers as they collected their work.

A Distinction profile student, Aine represents the standard of highly-motivated student we attract for this hands-on, practical arts administration course. We, the CSN Arts Administration course, are validated (Q-marked) by CHNTO, the former Museum Training Institute , UK, since 2002.

Jess O’Callaghan, who graduated with flying colours from the CSN Multimedia Course in 2010 recently won a coveted ‘A’ award in the annual YCN Student Awards in London.

On graduating from CSN with a BTEC HND (Higher National Diploma) in Multimedia, she completed a one year 'top-up' in 'Brighton & Hove City College' to gain a BA in 'Digital Media Design'

Arts Administration students engage with the City: Knowing the Keys to Audience Development

The new group of Arts Administration students are, as always, a special group of individuals. They come from divergent backgrounds. The major factor they have in common is their desire to work with people in the capacity of arts management.

To date, they have been on a Walkabout around all of the major arts organisations in Cork City. This team-building exercise allows the students to begin their writing about the arts, in earnest as well as their interest in photographing people, each other working as well as the vibrancy of the city - including working as management volunteers with the City Arts Office for CULTURE NIGHT; visiting Civic Trust (Festival) House and each individual student being placed in Work Placement in one of Cork's major arts organisations including Cork Opera House; Glucksman Gallery; Art Trail; Cork Film Festival; Civic Trust House; Backwater Artists Group and Wandesford Quay Gallery.

The students are in the process of planning, organising, staffing and working on the 11th Annual Exhibition of CSN student Art Work at Cork Vision Centre @ St. Peter's, opening Thursday 2nd February 2012. The exhibition is entitled Mind's Eye, and the interpretive planning we are working on includes the "Mind's Eye" concept of creativity, studied by great philosophers and thinkers, such as Albert Einstein. We all see the world through our "Mind's Eye".

Updates on the event will follow. We are dedicated to keeping the public informed about the progress of the Art and Design Department and the participation of the public in our events, exhibitions and open days.

"The 7 Characteristics of a Good Exhibition: The Moving Edge"

'the moving edge', CSN's May Summer Art and Design exhibition had something for everyone. This year, as always, we followed the exhibition design process that begins with "7 Characteristics of a Good Exhibition".

it must be safe and secure - health and safety of the audience, as well as the work on view, is the first priority in exhibition design. This characteristic is similar across the arts, music, theatre and dance, adapted for each art form.

it must be visible - a good exhibition has impact pieces at focal points of the route. The eye of the viewer might be caught by something in the distance, something up front and objects throughout the route of the show. Objects are placed for their technique, colour, balance, and excellent craftsmanship. A crowded exhibition confuses the visitor. "Less is more" for a first exhibition for visitor's who come to view work in a friendly environment.

it must catch the eye - work selected for the CSN exhibitions are selected by tutors and industry specialists. Like any art form, exhibition design focuses on the very best of work created during an academic year in several disciplines.

It must look good - a freshly painted area is the most appropriate for the good exhibition. Plinths, platforms and accessories are painted in colours that enhance the topic of the exhibition. Good label copy enhances the visitor's experience - and touches such as imagery and thought-provoking quotations carry each person along the route in a personalised way.

it must hold the attention - predictable exhbitions are not educational or fun. Label copy related to the theme of the exhibition helps the visitor to understand how the artist or designer creates the work. Humour can be used in moderation as well as shock value for some exhibitions. Educational activities might be added along the route of an exhibition - to engage the visitor in the experience.

it must be worthwhile - because CSN has dedicated annual exhibits in February and May, our intention is to keep each experience FRESH and interesting by showing a variety of changing themes and work from each course involved in the show. Music and educational aspects are always added in CSN exhibition programmes. We include informative guided tours, on-hand staff who can answer questions and provide participatory elements.

it must be in good taste - when an exhibition is in a college environment, we endeavour to both educate and entertain our audiences of potential students, the general public, the VEC management and the college community. A good exhibition should not offend an audience - we enter into a contract of trust when a show is presented, with the public's permission.

CSN maintains an in-house Student Collection, at Tramore Road, of work from all art and design courses in the college - maintained by Arts Administration.

the moving edge, art and design exhibition - opens 26th May 2011, 7-9 PM

Art and design, created by students at CSN during the 2010-2011 academic year, will be on display at the college from opening night, Thursday 26th May 2011 (7-9 PM); Friday 27th May; Monday 29th May through Thursday June 2nd from 10 AM - 4 PM, daily.

The exhibition will be officially opened on Thursday evening, 26th May, at 7:20 PM by Orla Flynn, Head (Acting); CIT's Crawford College of Art and Design, Sharman Crawford Street

The opening will include music in the landscaped CSN garden, under a marquee. Students of Music, Management and Sound at CSN will provide the entertainment.

The best work, selected by course teachers, will grace the ground floor of the college building in an exhibition design created by Arts Administration, for viewing pleasure.

Work will include Art, Craft and Design; Creative Ceramics; Creative Textiles; Access with Design; Multimedia 1 & 2 and Furniture Design 1 & 2. Interactive elements will engage the viewing public, including origami workshops to create 1000 Origami swans, which will be formed into a lantern, dedicated to the victims of the February tsunami in Japan. The swan-folding workshops will be led by students from Arts Administration and Art, Craft and Design.

Group tours will be organised for the public on Friday 27th May; Monday 30th May through Thursday 2nd June (between 10 Am and 4 PM), by checking in with the Information Desk in the CSN foyer. All course areas will be invigilated by students from the individual courses for people interested in the college for both coursework and on-going exhibitions.

Portfolio Course Emphasises Good Practice - Art, Craft and Design

After six months of intensive work in the studio, workshops, lecture theatre and in sketchbooks - students of Art, Craft and Design are beginning the process of attending interviews for 3rd level colleges and making decisions about staying at CSN for Level 6 courses.

Art, Craft and Design at Level 5 facilitates students coming from Leaving Certificate, world of work, individuals changing careers, people re-training in studio areas after a period of raising families and travelling - providing a skills-based course tailored for the serious art student.

Level 6 Painting with Business is in the preparatory stages - with an eye to running an enhanced "skills-building" course, for the serious art student who wants additional training in preparation for professional practice or to attend 3rd level college with a broader base of specialisation.

ACCESS with Design Students go into the Community

WoW!! 'Working out Weaving' with local secondary schools and Community groups

Access with Design facilitated three creative and lively workshops at the Tory Top Road Library in Ballyphehane. As part of the Work Experience in-house programme it was the students' remit to share the skill of weaving with members from the local community. The Presentation Girls Secondary School and the Ballyphehane Craft Initiative took part in workshops on table-top weaving using recycled clothing and salvaged bed linen. The work produced was inspiring and the Access with Design students were thrilled with the results - most importantly all of the participants took away a new skill that we hope they will use in craft work in the future.

Hair Raising! - a wig-making day created pieces for the 17th century Restoration play 'She Stoops to Conquer'

Another interesting collaboration was the bringing together of two courses from Coláiste StiofáinNaofa . The Access with Design students organised and assisted in the wig making with the Theatre Production course for a day at the Tory Top Road Library. The buzz and energy was there from the offset and the groups worked well together using an array of materials to produce some really wacky results, as you can see in their up-coming production, 'She Stoops to Conquer'.

FREE Saturday Worshops draw huge attention from an adoring public Arts Administration Students "inspire" with Creative Art Activities

Families from all over the Cork area joined together this morning for the second of 3 amazing workshops designed for children and their parents. The experience included a guided tour, story-telling, hands-on workshops - 3 age-specific activities, plus a poetry word-play activity high-lighted by LIVE music by the Music, Management and Sound students form the ensemble, "Nelson's Mandola".

The theme this week was "Under the Sea", drawing inspiration from several works in the show that incorporate sea imagery - jellyfish (by Fiona Cotter); photographs of Youghal Lighthouse (by Eimear Kelleher); Fabric and ribbon stitched net by Nuala O'Reilly-Teegan as well as a mono print by Grace O'Leary. Colour and varied materials gave the 30 strong group of young people a happy experience that allowed for perceptual and cognitive connections.

A third workshop will be held Saturday 19th February at Cork Vision Centre @ St. Peter's, 11-1 PM. The theme will be "The Emperor's New Clothes" and will incorporate wearable art, fashion and giving identities and clothing to some special lonely wooden visitors at Cork Vision Centre @ St. Peter's - waiting for "attire".

Drawing Inspiration opens to 500 people at Cork Vision Centre

drawing inspiration the 10th anniversary exhibition of art and design from CSN at Cork Vision Centre, opened to a huge crowd on Thursday evening 3rd February, 6-8 PM. Student work from CSN has been on view in a unique partnership with Cork Vision Centre, since 2001. Courses on view are: Art, Craft and Design; Arts Administration (event organisers. exhibition installation and weekend events specialists); Furniture Design 1 & 2; Creative Textiles; Creative Ceramics;

Access with Design 1 and 2; Multimedia 1 & 2 and Higher Diploma, Professional Arts - FD. Work was framed by students of arts administration to suit the Lynch System in Cork Vision Centre @ St. Peter's.

Trish Brennan, Head of Fine Art (Acting), CIT's Crawford College of Art and Design officially opened the show to the Cork public. Speaking on behalf of CSN was Principal, Tim Kelleher and on behalf of Cork Vision Centre, emcee for the evening, John X. Miller - Director Cork Civic Trust and Cork Vision Centre @ St. Peter's.

Artists, designers and their families, friends and colleagues enjoyed new and humorous exhibition techniques, the ambiance of the Cork Vision Centre @ St. Peter's amplified by music by ALL BLUES from Music, Management and Sound at CSN. The map of the exhibition, handed out to every visitor, made the show fall together as "one" - not isolating any course - showing the unity of the college courses as a "whole". CSN is well known for quality tuition in a nurturing environment for the pursuit of all the arts.

Weekend workshops began Saturday 5th February - with Origami and Haiku - story-telling and hands-on activities. The swans and whales, boats and fish were all put on the River Lee on the map of Cork to add to the colour and effect of the exhibition when one walks through the front doors. Next weekend 12th - the theme of the workshops from 11AM -1 PM will be "Under the Sea" and on the 19th Feb - "The Emperor's New Clothes" - ALL FREE to visitors - children and adults alike.

CSN Creative Ceramics Student Presents his Work to President Mary McAleese

Former CSN Creative Ceramics student Eoughan Beausang was awarded the Gold Medal of the Gaisce President Award by Mary McAleese in November 2010 at Dublin Castle. Eoughan was a student at the Access Course 2007-2009, and at the Creative Ceramics Course in 2009/2010 at CSN, and had made a table-top sculpture that represents the efforts of gaining the award through small scale figures that are climbing a mountain while engaged in various activities.

Eoghan presented this piece to the President at the awards night, which was very well received. We are all very proud of Eoughan and wish him the best with his future career.

Eoghan Beausang is currently studying Ceramics in second year at the Crawford College of Art and Design, Cork.

Creative Textiles Level 6 at CSN - "a cut above"

The 2009-2010 year saw amazing work produced in the areas of fashion, jewellery, interior design and surface manipulation in Creative Textiles.

Congratulations are due to student, Laura Vaughan, who completed an internship with designer Liz Nilson, in Dublin.

We welcome new students to the course this autumn, including CSN students from ACCESS with Design and Art, Craft and Design. Returning to CSN, to complete the City and Guilds Higher Diploma in Professional Arts, is Textiles student, Carmel Creaner.

We would like to wish past students the best of luck in their further studies in Crawford College of Art and Design and Sherkin Island/DIT Degree in Art.

NEWS Update from ACCESS with Design 2010-2011

This year we are launching a new and 'approved' Access with Design course. Learners will now complete our programme over five mornings per week in one full year. Students will further experience a range of exciting design-based techniques and projects. We will offer more time in core subjects, such as drawing and colour work, in a supported learning environment. Please refer to our CSN website main page for details: Access with Design; Department of Art and Design.

We are pleased to see that applications are high this year. Classes will begin on September 20th 2010.

Watch for us at Cork Art Trail's "road rolling" project (in November 2010) when printmaking students will collaborate with Cork Printmakers on a "large scale lino project".

We will also be 'out and about' in the city, documenting our 'impressions' of urban life, collecting material and imagery for our design projects.

A big congratulations to all this year's outgoing design students. Results were fantastic. Best of luck to those who are continuing in artistic studies at Crawford College of Art and Design and returning to CSN in Level 6 Textiles and Ceramics.

Creative Ceramics 2009/2010, a review

We are looking back at an exciting year in ceramic practice at CSN, where students have explored their potential in the area of sculpture, vessel and ceramic surfaces. Two students, Judy Fisher and Christopher O’Reagan have focussed in particular on experimental firing techniques, producing burnished and smoke fired pieces and building a paper kiln. Further extra curriculum activities included two Raku firings, a field trip to Kilkenny and Thomastown and a participation at the Ceramic Workshop and Visiting Lecturer Day at the Crawford Art College. While some students continue their own professional practice, others will study at third level Colleges in Ireland and abroad. Every year CSN's art and design students, including Furniture Design and the Higher Diploma in Professional Arts, raise the bar on the quality of work produced at Further Education level.

There is a broadening of vocabulary for materials. New sensitivities and responses are cultivated and put on view in a showcase of work in May each year that goes from strength-to-strength.

Best practice is exemplified by the entries from the visiting the public in our guest book and the extraordinary media response to Beautiful Proof.

Art, Craft and Design Students have sights on 3rd Level Colleges and Sketchbook Summers

54 happy, talentetd students from Art, Craft and Design at CSN were among the 150 students on view at Beautiful Proof, Summer Exhibition 28th May through 3rd June 2010.

The highlight of the exhibition, in this course area, were the 10 sketchbooks on display. The sketchbook process captures the imagination of the public as the genesis of work - from concept, to improvement in drawing over time, to the production of paintings, collages, printmaking and sculpture have their roots in the thumbnail drawings and developmental musings from the sketchbook.

Finished work representing Art, Craft and Design, (the first course in the Art and Design department, dating back to 1988) - maintains a high standard year after year, making this one of the prime national portfolio-preparation one-year courses. Word of mouth keeps this course growing from strength-to-strength.

Students said, at the opening, that this was the best year of their education - and being able, for mature students, to come back and retrain in a field they had pined for their entire careers makes the exhibition of the work so rewarding and spectacular for the environment of creativity created at CSN by staff and students together.

A visiting art educator from America was amazed at the standard of drawing and remarked at how well the exhibition represents the student work in a "gallery-like setting". "The themed element of the show is absolutely beautiful - it represents the entire department's work well, but I am particularly fascinated by the standard of drawing, the sketchbooks and good old-fashioned collage in the Art, Craft and Design course".

One parent, visiting from Aberdeen, Scotland said, "there's a great buzz about the place". The "standard of work is amazing for this level", said another visitor from Bantry.

Beautiful Proof, CSN's 22nd annual summer exhibition opened to a crowd of 0ver 600 guests.

John X. Miller, Director Cork Civic Trust and Cork Vision Centre was the official opening speaker. His words were both meaningful and upbeat, praising the quality of the student work and the input from both students of Arts Administration in the planning and organising of the event, as well as the individual course directors who helped make all of this possible.

The exhibit runs from Friday 28th May through Thursday, 3rd June from 10 AM - 4 PM.

Beautiful Proof, an exhibition of art and design by students of CSN will open to the public on Thursday evening, May 27th, from 7- 9PM. Work from 8 courses will grace the ground and 1st floors of the college, open to the public from Friday 28th May (10-4 PM) and Monday 31st May through Thursday 3rd May, (10 - 4 PM). Groups are welcome and students on art courses at secondary level are welcome to browse and participate in guided tours by students of Arts Administration.

Opening the show, officially, on May 27th, is John X. Miller, Director Cork Civic Trust and Cork Vision Centre@ St. Peter's. Music on the night will be provided, in the garden, by students of CSN's Music, Management and Sound - featuring music of the 90's and naughties. Surprises are always part of this electrifying evening, the culmination of a year's hard work.

Courses on view will be: Art, Craft and Design; Creative Textiles; Creative Ceramics; Multimedia 1 and 2; Furniture Design 1 and 2; Access with Design 1 and 2; Higher Diploma in Professional Arts (Level 7 - City and Guilds) and Arts Administration.

The exhibition design, the hang, the opening and the week's open programming have been prepared by students of Arts Administration Level 6 - a professional course for individuals who want to experience, hands on, the field of arts management.

Art, Craft & Design Students Visit Backwater 20-10

Students of CSN's Art, Craft & Design course took some precious time between interviews and classes to visit BACKWATER 20-10 at The Crawford Gallery, Emmett Place.

With prepared worksheets in hand, the students walked the 3 floors of the exhibition looking at innovative exhibition design, the variety of work on view, film/video installations and interactive features as well as the concept of "curatorship" in exhibitions.

Students were invigorated by a trip off-site and returned from the day with renewed energy to go into the last months of their portfolio preparation course. Many students have received their points back from CCAD, are travelling to LSAD for interview, DIT, Glasgow School of Art, Dun Laoghire College of Art, Galway School of Art and others have applied for Level 6 courses internally at CSN.

Imprints of Shandon - LLL Festival - Access with Design

Inspiration comes from a series of visits to a specific place. Research follows - allowing students to process information, create sketchbook entries and here bring to the Access with Design course 1st year students -inspired images in both print and stitch of the glorious views of Shandon in Cork.

Architecture, cobbled streets, the Shandon bells, the famous "Goldie Fish", plus the divergent people and the colour of life give impetus to the creative process.

Nancy Falvey, of Ballyphehane, will officially open this in-house display of student work, to the Lifelong Learning Festival audience, on Tuesday morning, 23rd March, 10 AM on the ground floor foyer at CSN.

Primetime, (No.s 8&9 Washington Street, Cork), is currently running a great competition for a chance to have your very own graphic printed on a skateboard.
Using a skate deck as your canvas, they asked for people to create an image or design celebrating the diversity and independence of skating and graffiti culture and its interaction with the surrounding environment.

Coláiste Stiofáin Naofa BTEC Multimedia student Oliver Keane's design has made it to the final six selected. His design, incorporating Cork’s Shandon steeple, has been printed on a skate deck and is currently on display in the shop. The overall winner will be decided by a public vote. Call into the shop to see the designs and cast your vote.

City Arts Officer, Liz Meaney, official opening speaker at Backstory, joined the crowd of 300+ people to celebrate the quality work produced by students of CSN in the areas of Fine Art and Design.

70 works, consisting of Art, Craft and Design; Creative Textiles; Creative Ceramics; Access with Design; Multimedia and Furniture Design grace the open celestial space of Cork Vision Centre @ St. Peter's, including a puppet theatre, on the mezzanine, with character created by Access with Design 1 students, from a renown Toulouse Lautrec painting, Evening at the Moulin Rouge.

Students of Arts Administration organised the opening as well as the installation and "hang" of the show and will be giving tours and workshops during the month of February on site..

Attending the exhibit opening were individuals ranging from secondary school students and their art teachers, parents and friends of CSN students, former students, students interested in CSN courses, arts sector management, work experience employers of arts admin students and friends of the Cork Vision Centre.

The atmosphere at the opening, subtley paced by ROUND MIDNIGHT, CSN Music, Management and Sound students, was electric. By all reports, "a good time was had by all". Pictures and articles about the exhibit appeared in Cork Independent; BACK PAGE Cork Examiner; and the Evening ECHO.

The exhibition BACKSTORY runs Tuesdays through Saturdays, 10-5 PM through Wednesday Feb. 24th, Cork Vision Centre @ St. Peter's, N. Main Street, Cork.

Multimedia Graduate in VFX

CSN Multimedia Graduate Iva Trajkovic has recently landed a job with one of the world's top visual effects and post-production companies Framestore CFC. After completing her BTEC Higher National Diploma at CSN two years ago, Iva went on to do a one year BA top up course in Bournemouth. She was then accepted onto the prestigious MA in Digital Effects in Bournemouth University and from there was taken on by Framestore as a junior compositor. Iva was introduced to compositing and 3D as part of her BTEC HND using software like 3DS Max & Combustion. Since starting the job last October Iva has already chalked up credits on the forthcoming Nanny McPhee and the Big Bang

Professional Arts in public spaces

The Professional Arts students are again working with clients from the public sector on one of their creative projects. Clients this year have been confimed as: Cork City Enterprise Board, Crawford Gallery, Cork School of Music, Cork City Council and Cork City Library. Students are designing and making pieces according to a given brief that will then be on display in a public area. Two students Eli Caamano and Sandy Hyland had their work displayed at this years 'Showcase' in Dublin at the end of January.

Creative Ceramics 2010

Creative Ceramics students have now finalised the clay and glaze development module and have developed recipies for a variety of coloured and matt glazes. Students are preparing for interview into second year Ceramics at third level Colleges and have just started into the sculpture project. Portfolio preparation is taking on the rhythm of the spring term where students are involved in tutorials and fulfilling schedules "tailored" to their needs for Art; Design; Fashion Design; Ceramics and Multimedia, as well as other courses in the arts sector.

Arts Administration at CSN will produce an exceptional exhibition of work of Art and Design from the college at Cork Vision Centre @ St. Peter's, N. Main. Street, opening Tuesday February 2nd 2010 through 24th Februday 2010.

75 pieces of work from 6 courses will grace the expanse of the mid-town venue, including public tours; weekend family programming - including workshops in art and music - with all the fun of a multi-dimensional experience.

Courses represented in the exhibition are: Art, Craft and Design; Access with Design 1 & 2; Ceramics Level 6; Textiles Level 6; Furniture Design 1 and 2; Multimedia 1 and 2 as well as installation design and implementation by students of Arts Administration.

The Professional Arts Students : Brendan Corcoran, Elisenda Caamano, Conor O’Keefe and Sandy Hyland were exhibiting at the prestigious Craft Cale at the Glucksman Gallery, UCC, Cork on the weekend of the 7th of November.

Elisenda Caamano and Sandy Hyland are also showing their work as part of the exhibition ‘Generations’ that is currently being held at the Crafts Council Gallery in Kilkenny. The exhibition which features selected works from Irish Design Institute Graduate Design Awards and the Irish Arts Review/Crafts Council of Ireland Emerging Maker Award opened on Saturday the 31st of October and will run until the 10th of January 2010.

Arts Administration Students get the BACKSTORY

Seventeen 2009-10 students of Arts Administration at CSN have begun the process of Planning and Organising the 8th annual Art and Design Exhibition, BACKSTORY, opening at Cork Vision Centre@ St. Peter's in February 2010.

With the CSN student art and design work already selected for the show, AA students have been led in an "exhibit title" brainstorming session, by CIT graduate in Graphic Design, Paul Delaney. Emphasising team working, allowing the entire class to explore possibilities for graphic design "interpretive planning" for the exhibition - hundreds of words, branching off of the title "BACKSTORY" were splashed across a classroom white board. Everyone participated.

Project Managers for the exhibition are Tadgh Crowley, LSAD graduate and Caitriona Considine, graudate of Cork School of Music. They will delegate jobs to the other class members.

Management skills, Customer Service, Marketing, Exhibition Techniques and Design, accompany the inherent "nurturing of skills" necessary for successfully dealing with the public - creatively organising the hang, the opening, weekend programming and tour guiding throughout the month of February 2010 will be fulfilled by the motivated group.

Hands-on, practical modules are a hallmark of this innovative course. CSN Arts Administration is validated by CHNTO, UK, formerly the Museum Training Institute. Watch this BLOG space.

The Professional Arts Diploma will run again this year, with 1 Textile and 4 Furniture Design students, after funding has been confirmed by the Cork City Enterprise Board.

After a successful year in 1007/8 with an end of year exhibition in the Rubicon Centre, CIT, the course is running again to facilitate students that are ready to prepare for self-employment.

7 out of 9 Creative Ceramics students have successfully transferred ino second Year Ceramics at the Crawford College of Art and Design. The end of year show was a great success and included wall pieces, large scale scupltures and small decorative vessels and pieces from the new sculpture module. A selection of work will be on show in February in the Vision Centre. A new group of first year students is scheduled to start on the 14th of September.

Arts Admin Student Profile, Sinéad Foley 07-08

Sinéad Foley is a past student of the Arts Administration course. Originally from West Cork, she now lives and works in Darwin, Australia.

"I graduated from Limerick School of Art and Design, in 2005, with a B.A. in Printmaking. A past student of CSN told me about the Arts Administration course. I was a student at CSN from 2007-2008. During the course, I did Work Experience with the National Sculpture Factory in administration and also volunteered for Art Trail. I also had the opportunity to act as Project Manager, with fellow-student, Anna Crudge, for the CSN May art and design exhibition, entitled "Up the Walls". Overall , my experience on the course was broad and varied and covered all aspects of working in the arts industry. I found the course challenging, but overcoming each challenge was thoroughly rewarding".

"I am now working for the Mbantua Gallery, Darwin (www.mbantua.com.au) as a Gallery Assistant. The gallery specialises in contemporary aboriginal art from the Utopia Region near Alice Springs. I decided to move to Australia as I believe it offers better job and lifestyle opportunities. All the skills I learned on the Arts Administration course are relevant and being put into practice in my current job. I got a lot out of the course thanks to the tutors' passion for the subject, which working in "it", I now understand."

IN THE NOW, annual exhibition of art and design, opened to the public Thursday evening 21st of May to a crowd of over 700 people. Friends and families enjoyed speeches by Senator Mairín Quill, who is retiring from politics; and official opening speaker Mags Geaney who thoughtfully spent time looking at all of the work in the show to prepare a moving speech - paying tribute to the teachers and students, the arts administration students who organised the event and the management for providing a creative atmosphere for this type of important exhibition in troubled times. Taking refuge in the magic of the world of art is a positive pass time for adults and children alike. The variety of work on view in this exhibition of over 400 works has been created by the following CSN courses: Art, Craft and Design;

Raku Firing

Tuesday, May the5th 09
The students of the Creative Ceramics Course had their second Raku firing today with Rainer Marcinkovsky at Colaiste Stiofain Naofa.
Raku is an experimental firing technique first developed in Japan. The glazed ceramic work is fired to end temperature ( here1050°C) and taken out of the kiln when red hot and reduced in sawdust. The glazes crackle and vary in colour and effect while the body turns black. The technique is very immediate and gives participants the opportunity to experience the process of firing directly.
Two firings were fitted into a busy day and the ware included small vessels, wall pieces and sculptures. The most successful pieces can be seen at the end of year exhibition ‘In The Now’ opening on Thursday night, the 21st of May.

IN THE NOW, 21st Annual Exhibition of art and design by CSN students will open to the public on Thursday evening, 21st May, 7-9 PM at the college (CSN) on Tramore Road, Cork. Coláiste Stiofáin Naofa, College of Further Education, is delighted to announce the opening of an exhibition showcasing new and exciting work by emerging talent from Access with Design 1 course 2008 - 2009.

The joy and fulfilment of returning to education is celebrated for the Lifelong Learning Festival in this exhibition. Clare Hennessey, Director of the Cork Printmakers, will officially open the exhibition on Tuesday, 31st March, at 10.30 AM, ground floor foyer.

Be dazzled and enchanted by ‘Angels and Arches’ a stunning collection of beautifully stitched and printed work by first year students on the Access with Design course. Sewn threads, glistening layered fabrics and embellished details entrance the viewer and showcase the talent of this unique class.

The decorative architectural beauty of St. Fin Barre’s Cathedral is the starting point of the students’ creative journeys. Research drawings, undertaken on site, have been developed into a majestic collection of inspirational prints and stitched pieces. CSN welcomes the public to view this exhibition that celebrates students’ newfound skills and creativity in the interpretation of one of Corks, most famous landmarks.

Access with Design promotes art for the learner at beginners’ level. CUES Kite-Making Saturday at the Vision Centre

Organised by Arts Administration student, Jeanienne McCarthy, the kitmaking workshops proved to be a wonderful experience for the attending families. A short tour was provided first and the children had an art student (here we see Laura Perrem, Art, Craft and Design CSN with Ethan) working with them to help with glue and organising materials. Being able to take home the kite was a big hit with the attenders. Parents stayed on to listen to the music from 1-3 with their young ones, making a day of it on N. Main Street. FREE to the public, workshops will be held on Valentines's Day AM 10-12 noon (Card Making) and music follwing 1-3 PM. 21st Feb will be a morning art workshop to make percussion shakers (10 AM - 12 noon) followed by a Trad session and rhythm workshop with Aodán Coyne and friends, from Ennis Co. Experimental Projects - Textile Student, Anne Kiely's Clingfilm Dress and Stillettoes - CUES impact piece

Experimental project work varies from course to course in the Department of Art and Design. Anne Kiely's cling film dress, with embedded hydrangea leaves and recyclable materials, including the skirt. The dress provided a point of interest as it appeared to be floating and set off other pieces of work, including textile panel by Carmel Creaner. The colour of Carmel's piece carried a wall that was a perfect fit for its length and width.

CSN offers a course for everyone's talents. Working with members of all courses is an advantage for students of Arts Administration students who write about the arts, photograph art work and people, practice customer service and work with arts and the community.

Grazed, group show of Creative Ceramics students at Patrick Street Gallery

The students of the Creative Ceramics Course 2008 presented a show of their end of year ceramics at the Patrick Street Gallery in June. The show was organized by students ( as part of their marketing module), curated by Course director Stefanie Dinkelbach and opened by Cork based sculptor Kevin Holland. A variety of pieces including vessel shapes, wall pieces as well as small and large scale sculptures were on display for a week before the midsummer festival.

Creative Textiles

Creative Textiles provides training in a diverse range of skills on paper and in studio based work. Students who participate in this course will learn how to develop ideas from the planning stage through to the final product in a variety of different subjects and techniques. Personal projects allow for the cultivation of an individual style in the resulting portfolio and artifacts produced.

The course is a multi-disciplined area of study and covers a range of skills such as Printed Textiles, Fabric Manipulation and Stitch, Drawing, and Colour and Dyes in the creation of seemingly effortless textiles suitable for fashion, accessories, interiors, and fine art.

Graduate profile: Louise Roberts

Louise Roberts is a past student from Art, Craft & Design currently teaching Art at Colaiste Daibheid Cork. Louise completed her Higher Diploma in Education at Crawford College of Art and Design and has a Bachelor of Arts in Painting from Limerick School of Art and Design.

I attended Colaiste Stiofain Naofa in 2001-2002. Personally I enjoyed the experience immensely and found that it prepared me for art college life by improving my technical and creative skills and building my confidence. Students are exposed to all areas of Art and Design and benefit from the varying specialist skills of individual tutors. Tutors strive for standards of excellence from their students and nurture each individuals particular strengths. It was here that I discovered my love for painting.

An Art and Design Student is always welcomed back to visit the college. The staff are always interested in a students career and are willing to facilitate past students in whatever way possible.

Multimedia students get online tuition

One of the benefits of broadband Internet access is the potential to deliver media rich learning material to support tuition given in the classroom or studio.
Students on the
BTEC Higher National Diploma in Multimedia at CSN have been reaping the benefits of this in their 3D modelling & Animation studies. Using screen recording software, teaching staff can now create video versions of lectures and tutorials normally delivered only in a classroom context.
Ceara O' Shea, a 2nd yr student tells us, "This makes learning much more effective. We can cover a new technique in a workshop context, but often a week later you are stuck trying to remember how to do it. It's great to be able to access these video tutorials, either in college or at home".
